The Jam: Dig The New Breed (Live)

The importance of this live album from The Jam has lessened over the years. In 1982 when it was released it was received like the Holy Grail because there was simply no other Jam live material available and we craved it. Now, there is the fantastic Fire And Skill six gig box set; the Jam At The BBC live sessions; various live gig extras as part of the “deluxe” remaster series and the Live Jam release which plays like a full live set, even though it might not be one.

Dig The New Breed, however, is a 14 song collection derived from live gigs between 1977 and 1982. The quality is variable but we were grateful at the time for anything that captured that feeling of being at a Jam gig. I was lucky enough to be at ten of them. It would have made more sense at the time to have released a full gig, but this was how the band chose to reward their legions of loyal fans. At the time, nobody complained. They really didn’t. Everything was lapped up.

I remember at the time, though, being slightly underwhelmed by the album, feeling that indeed it did not reflect the true thrill of being at a Jam gig and that the tracks chosen were not the best either. I would have liked to have seen Tube Station, Strange Town or Wardour Street on there, along with maybe Life From A Window or Here Comes The Weekend from the earlier days.

As it is, is it good to hear In The City, To Be Someone and It's Too Bad.  

Big Bird is an interesting inclusion but sonically it is a mess and not a patch on the original. The take of Going Underground on here is somewhat clumsy too.

Queen live albums are funny things, as indeed their concerts were. I saw them only the once, at Earl's Court, London, in 1977, and, while I enjoyed the spectacle of the show and the performance I was left a bit frustrated by the group's insistence on cutting down several songs to just a minute or two in length, as part of a Medley. This was something they were to do throughout their career. The practice was ok when performing a medley of covers, I guess, such as on 1985's Live At Wembley but when it involved three or four of the band's own songs then I found it really frustrating, because I wanted to hear the full versions of the songs. Killer Queen was a song that fell victim to this butchery on several occasions. What will she have thought? This feeling of irritation was exacerbated when several minutes were taken up elsewhere in the concert with extended, meandering guitar noodling during Brighton Rock - something that was usually twice as long as in the song's o...

THE ROLLING STONES

Ah, The Rolling Stones. Where do I start?  I guess I was first made aware of them as a seven or eight year-old in the 1966-67-68 period when they started to appeal to my heightening sense that the all-conquering Beatles were goody-goodies and The Stones were proper bad boys. My developing tastes found this to be an admirable thing. Even at that age, there was a nascent feeling that if the older generation - parents, teachers and the like, even the judiciary - despised them, they must have something about them. Ironically, though, my Mother loved The Stones.  Then, of course,  there was the music - loud, punchy, riffy, buzzy and singalong, but not in a  "she loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah.."  way, but in a  "he can't be a man because he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me"  style. Simple Minds: Street Fighting Years - 1989

This was a totally different beast of an album. It as the product of a mature band who had "made it". For that reason, it attracted criticism of being self-satisfied and smug. I'm not sure about that. It is a cohesive, solid piece of work. It is decidedly uncommercial, dark in ambience and political in its lyrical motivation. It suffers a little from CD bloat in being over an hour in length. Too long for someone like me brought up on sixties and seventies albums.  Anyway, it begins with a smoother, bassier, almost jazzy and laid-back sound in  Street Fighting Years . It is great to hear some bass dominating a Simple Minds track. Despite some orchestrated bolder parts, it is overall a most atmospheric, but low-key introduction to the album. A similar acoustic vibe is found on  Soul Crying Out . Aerosmith: Get Your Wings - 1974

Aerosmith's next two albums became  a little bit more professional, varied and appealing each time. This was the first of them... Same Old Song And Dance is a gloriously riffy opener, augmented by some kick-ass brass from The Brecker Brothers. It is pretty much blueprint mid-seventies US hard rock in four/five minutes. It is loud, riffy and chugging. I have read some criticisms of the drum sound somewhere. You won't get any here. It pounds away nicely for me, thanks. The marvellously-titled Lord Of The Thighs has a vaguely bluesy, funky rhythm to it and a great rolling drum sound that matches the riffs every step of the way. It is an early example of rock served up with a slightly funky edge.  The band were said to have developed a "dirty funk" sound and while I can sort of understand the description i.e. there is a greasy, sleazy undertow to the music, it sure ain't really funky, is it?  The sound is definitely getting more grubbily appealing as the albums go by,...

The Beach Boys: 20 Golden Greats

The Beach Boys, like their sixties counterparts the Beatles, were very much a group of distinct phases. Like The Beatles, they began with several years of joyful, unashamed teen pop before noticeably "going weird" at the same time.  This is the very first Beach Boys compilation I bought, in the boiling hot UK summer of 1976. It was totally ideal for such a summer. I almost felt I was catching a wave in California even though I was in Buckinghamshire.  "If everybody had an ocean"  - indeed. The collection takes us to the end of the sixties, missing out the Surf's Up and Holland albums, both of which are good, and the occasional later classic such as Lady Lynda , from 1980. U2: Rattle And Hum - 1988

  I remember all the fuss about this album and the accompanying movie, which was annoyingly pretentious - see the above quote. All of a sudden U2 were the "greatest band on the planet" and bloody  Bono  could do no wrong.  I had a girlfriend at the time who blathered on thus - "did you see Bono in  Rattle And Hum ? He went into a gospel church and sang with the choir, wow he was fantastic, they are the best band the world has ever seen and he is the best singer...". Yes, she really said that. Personally, the movie left me cold and the whole hype about it I found perplexing, to be honest. The gospel bit was uplifting, though.  This, the soundtrack album, is a strange affair - a mixture of collaborations, contrived tracks and a few live ones - it meanders all over the place. The Archies: Absolutely The Best Of The Archies

It is very easy to dismiss this album of tracks that appeared on the back of 1969's huge bubblegum hit,  Sugar Sugar . After all the group were not real, they were cartoon characters and the music is played by a redoubtable, talented band of session musicians. That is of no matter to me, though.  If you like early  Beach Boys ,  The Monkees ,  The Mamas & The Papas ,  Tommy Roe's Dizzy , early  Jackson 5 ,  The Bay City Rollers , the late seventies power pop of  The Rubinoos  and early  Blondie  and summery bubblegum pop in general then this is for you.   I won't analyse every track in detail, they are probably too frothy to particularly justify that, but numbers like  Truck Driver ,  This Is Love  with its great bass line and pure  Rubinoos  vibe and  Melody Hill , which has a guitar intro similar to those used by  Bruce Springsteen  around 1977.   The songs are all driven ...

THE JAM

Formed in Woking in 1975-76,  The Jam were  Paul Weller , with his harsh British working class vocals, and  Who -like guitar, underpinned by  Bruce Foxton ’s rumbling bass and  Rick Buckler ’s metronomic drumming.  While they shared the "angry young men" outlook and fast tempos of their punk rock contemporaries, The Jam wore smartly tailored suits rather than ripped clothes, and, rather than rejecting the influences of recent rock history in common with other punk bands, they incorporated a number of mainstream 1960s youthful rock and R&B influences, particularly from The Who, The Kinks and also from Motown music. This set the Jam apart from most of their contemporaries, and placed them at the forefront of a nascent mod revival movement .   So, on to The Jam’s breakneck debut album. Ten Years After: Sssh - 1969

This was Ten Years After’s third album, from 1969, and it was far more rocking than the previous one, which had dabbled in jazz and psychedelia. This was far heavier fare. The transition had begun. Bad  Scene  is an almost punky thrash to open with, featuring some caustic guitar, pounding piano, frantic drumming and a strange rock ‘n’ roll change of pace in the middle. It sort of defies description - it is not blues rock, or country rock or the psychedelic jazzy stuff from the previous album.  Two Time Mama  is a short bottleneck-ish blues with that high vocal that Canned Heat would use on Going Up The Country. Stoned  Woman  is a fine, chunky, riffy example of how the band were turning from blues to harder rock and this is continued to even greater extent on the excellent cover of  Good Morning Little Schoolgirl , which is no longer a blues but a heavy rock workout with "I wanna ball you all night long" lyrics to match.  Would you believe  I...

Rod Stewart: A Night On The Town - 1976

Of the albums released after Rod Stewart "sold out"  and became a somewhat preposterous, preening superstar, this is by far my favourite. I prefer it to the incredibly successful predecessor  Atlantic Crossing . It is packed full of excellent, riffy rock songs and big rock ballads of the sort that Stewart did so well.  The "slow side" starts with the smoochy Tonight's The Night . Here we get the sensual, seductive majesty of   this knee-trembler   with Rod going all lecherous - the lusty cocksman telling his innocent and apparently virginal young companion just exactly how good her night is going to be. It is ludicrously horny and corny, of course, but who cares, I can't help but love it. The original recording had Rod's squeeze at the time,  Britt Ekland , sighing and cooing in French all over the end part. Subsequent releases have deleted it out (at Britt's request), which was a shame as the vocals added a certain erotic atmosphere....
