Taj Mahal: The Best Of Taj Mahal

Born Henry Fredericks, Taj Mahal's blues rock career had its peak in the late sixties-early seventies. His blues is played very much in a solid rock style - big and powerful, with classic rock drum backing, harmonica and Mahal's knife through butter blues guitar. 

This is an excellent compilation of some of his best recordings from that period. The sound quality is very impressive throughout. There is a wonderful, refreshing purity to the blues on here. If you love proper blues rock, you will love this. Taj Mahal liked to rock 'n' roll too, plus he enjoyed a bit of country stuff. There is all sorts included on this fine album. 

Statesboro Blues is an absolutely barnstorming slab of rousing blues rock, jammed full of searing guitar and a great vocal. Leaving Trunk is a huge, muscular piece of chugging rock. So powerful. What a bass line on it too. The recognisable Corinna Corinna has been covered by many artists, notably Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and Albert King. 

King also covered the shuffling, funky She Caught The Katy And Left Me A Mule To Ride. The "katy" was the Kansas to Texas railroad. The rocking blues returns with the lively You're Going To Need Somebody On Your Bond. Cakewalk Into Town is a jaunty, fun blues backed by what sounds like a tuba. Oh Susanna is given a funky, vaguely reggae-ish makeover. 

Frankie And Albert is a folky blues also covered by Bob Dylan on Good As I Been To You. Chevrolet is a funky number, while Johnny Too Bad is a cover of The Slickers' reggae early seventies reggae hit. It begins with a gentle acoustic guitar before an authentic thumping reggae groove kicks in and we get maybe the first example of blues reggae. I love this. 

Sweet Mama Janisse is a fine traditional blues to finish off this highly recommended, fantastic-sounding compilation. A most enjoyable, invigorating listen.

Firstly, a brief intro to Roderick David Stewart.... As for many of my contemporaries, it was actually Maggie May that first captivated me as a twelve year-old, watching soon to be legendary cocksman kick footballs around on Top Of The Pops . I liked his flamboyant, laddish cheekiness and it was just such a great song, wasn't it? I duly bought the single and then the equally good (if not better) You Wear It Well , followed by What Made Milwaukee Famous and Oh No Not My Baby as they duly came out. I became a Faces fan too, unsurprisingly. Rod was a lad. The Faces were lads. I was a lad. The deal was sealed. The Rolling Stones: My Top Ten Singles

Ah, The Rolling Stones. Where do I start? I guess I was first made aware of them as a seven or eight year-old in the 1966-67-68 period when they started to appeal to my heightening sense that the all-conquering Beatles were goody-goodies and The Stones were proper bad boys. My developing tastes found this to be an admirable thing. Even at that age, there was a nascent feeling that if the older generation - parents, teachers and the like, even the judiciary - despised them, they must have something about them. Ironically, though, my Mother loved The Stones.  Then, of course,  there was the music - loud, punchy, riffy, buzzy and singalong, but not in a "she loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah.." way, but in a "he can't be a man because he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me" style. The Beatles: My Top Ten Singles

As with my "Red Album" review, before progressing to the album, a little background for you.... I have always had a strange relationship with The Beatles. On the one hand, aged about five, I owned a plastic Beatles guitar, so they were the first musical memory I had, along with a vague knowledge of Elvis. A lot of their output was easy for a young child to sing - the puerile "she loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah" was probably the first I learnt, to the frustration of my parents, who hated me saying "yeah" instead of "yes" . The accursed Yellow Submarine was number one in primary school playgrounds all over the country. In the mid sixties, The Beatles were simply everywhere, even for five-six year old kids like me. Roxy Music: My Top Ten Singles

For many people, Roxy Music mean the Radio Two stalwarts of Jealous Guy, Love Is The Drug, Avalon, Dance Away and Oh Yeah! , performed by Bryan Ferry in a white tuxedo and played in lounge bars throughout the land.  For others, however, it is the strikingly innovative band that exploded on the scene with the single Virginia Plain in the late summer of 1972 that floats our boat. They are a band of two distinct halves, like Fleetwood Mac (actually they had three) - the pre 1975 incarnation and the post hiatus one of 1979 to 1983. I like both of them, as it happens, but it will always be the early years, those five great albums and the singles that do it for me. Now, I am not given to making top tens, because my opinions are always changing and I find it impossible to say that one song is better than another, but I've decided to do a few, so here goes with the incredibly difficult task of narrowing David Bowie's 45 rpm output down to ten. Stevie Wonder: My Top Ten Singles

I have covered a fair bit of Stevie Wonder's remarkable career with this list, but this was not a deliberate ploy - some sixties, some seventies - it is just how it worked out. Let's get that clavinet and harmonica out..... ⑩ KEEP ON RUNNING (1971) Maybe not an obvious choice for this top ten, Keep On Running gives us the funk, big time. It's an irresistibly groovy, cookin' and most memorable number, with prominent and assertive female backing vocalists energetically helping Stevie out behind all that layered clavinet. Stevie had got really into that instrument by now, hadn't he? This sort of deep, heavy funk is very popular on today's radio, but back then stations wanted more poppy numbers. The single bombed, reaching only #90, unfortunately. That was an absolute travesty. It boils on a bubbling high heat from the first note. Queen: My Top Ten Singles

As a teenage visitor to the many record shops that existed in the early-mid seventies, I had flipped past the sleeve of Queen's debut album, so I was familiar with it. I also saw the posters for their appearance at my local rock club, Friars in Aylesbury in 1973. I was too young to attend. I was also aware when they supported my favourite band, Mott The Hoople, in 1974.  They burst into my sphere with the Seven Seas Of Rhye single and then with Killer Queen. It was the era of glam and, while Freddie Mercury fitted the bill for a glam rocker, with his long, dark hair, black nail varnish and flouncy white blouses, there were still several bands/artists I preferred - Mott, Bowie, Roxy Music, and Cockney Rebel. Queen, at that point, came in the second section. I knew they were credible in comparison to say, out and out glammers like Sweet, but in many ways I saw them as imitators as opposed to innovators. Elton John: My Top Ten Singles

I first became aware of Elton John in the early seventies when he appeared on a light entertainment show as a guest - something like Morecambe & Wise or Mike Yarwood - and my father, who hated pop music, seemed not to object to him, liking his bespectacled, studious look. As a fan of the rebellious Rolling Stones image, that instantly made me hate Elton John. Such contempt was soon blown away, however, as Elton soon became a platform-booted preposterous glam rocker and I lapped it up, all the way down the yellow brick road.  I bought lots of his singles, plus Don't Shoot Me, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Captain Fantastic , also familiarising myself with Honky Château and Tumbleweed Connection via my friends' record collections. Joni Mitchell: Don Juan's Reckless Daughter - 1977

  This was a somewhat sprawling, very experimental acquired taste of a double album here from Joni. It was made so, to a great extent, by the side long and possibly indulgent (only in places, I might add) of  Paprika Plains , which is probably eight or so minutes too long, at sixteen of them. I love the superb rock drums and clarinet bit fourteen minutes in though! Knock eight minutes off and you have a great track. Mitchell said of it - "....the Improvisational, the spontaneous aspect of this creative process – still as a poet – is to set words to the music, which is a hammer and chisel process. Sometimes it flows, but a lot of times it's blocked by concept. And if you're writing free consciousness – which I do once in a while just to remind myself that I can, you know, because I'm fitting little pieces of this puzzle together – the end result must flow as if it was spoken for the first time...."
