Rod Stewart: Covers & Crooning - 2002 to 2012

The Great American Songbook Volumes 1 to IV - 2002 to 2005

In 2002 Rod Stewart did what several artists of his vintage (including Eric Clapton and, amazingly, Bob Dylan a bit later on) did and released an album of covers of crooners from the likes of Frank Sinatra, delighting mothers, grandmothers, aunts and dinner-party hosts across the world and providing a Christmas present option to give to those people. Not only, that, building on the success of the first one he released FOUR of the damn things in a three year period. Now, taking in one of them is ok for a reasonably pleasant forty minutes' listen every now and again but trying to digest four of them is definite overkill. Anyway, they are all immaculately played by Stewart's high quality collection of musicians and Rod's now croaky but warm voice would seem highly suited to the material. Look, the songs have a classic appeal and it is all nice, unthreatening stuff, but anyone who grew up with Rod's music in the late sixties/early seventies will raise a quizzical eyebrow at the albums' sheer existence.

Still The Same/Soulbook/Great American Songbook V/Merry Christmas Baby - 2006 to 2012

Rod now went into full-on cover version mode to provide eminently dispensable froth for the Christmas market, year after year. First he covered great rock classics, then did the same for soul, followed by a fifth - yes a fifth - album of crooners and finishing off with a truly cheesy Christmas album. You would imagine that he would have covered the rock and soul material well, as maybe seventies Rod would have done, but no, the albums are surprisingly poor, particularly the soul one. I have to say I was surprised by this. The crooner album is actually ok, though, as all of them are taken in isolation. The Christmas one is not worthy of comment other than to say that both the front cover and the track Red Suited Superman are among the worst creations of Rod's long career, by far. Worst cover. Worst song.

Now it was surely time for Rod to get credible again...
