The Who: Endless Wire - 2006
This, The Who's 2006 "comeback" album has never particularly caught my attention - which is maybe doing it a disservice.
It goes on far too long in its second half in a Tommy “rock opera” style for a start, but there are some goodies to be found on there in the album’s conventional first half, such as the Baba O’Riley-influenced Fragments, The Punk And The Godfather riff-styled Mike Post Theme and the both Quadrophenia-ish Black Widow’s Eyes and It’s Not Enough. Influences abound as well - Roger does his best to sound like Tom Waits on In The Ether and Endless Wire is ever so Tom Petty-ish, isn't it?
I feel that some potentially promising tracks like the rocking Sound Round and Pick Up The Peace are way too short, however, falling victim to the “Wire And Glass” mini-opera thing (yes, Pete's at it again) on the album’s second half. We Got A Hit is great in its extended format, however.
