The Who: A Quick One - 1965

This was The Who's second album and, although it is ok, it lacked its predecessor's sonic shock. My Generation had truly kicked mod-sixties ass.

This one seemed to be a bit of a treading water effort. Some of the band's best singles from the era such as Substitute, A Legal Matter, The Kids Are Alright and I'm A Boy were not present.

The best tracks were So Sad About Us (covered convincingly by The Jam in 1978), John Entwistle's rumbling, oddball Boris The Spider and Run Run RunMartha & The Vandellas' Heat Wave was also covered later by The Jam and I Need You was the title of a track on The Jam's second album, This Is The Modern World  - no hiding their influences there.

The sprawling, nine-minute plus closer, A Quick One, While He's Away had its good points but was far too indulgent for my liking. It stood as a pointer to the group's next direction.
