Here we have a collection of songs from the period when punk morphed into new wave. These were all UK releases, although not all the groups are UK artists. Sure, some may or may not be what many consider to be "new wave". They are very much songs of a time and a place for me. They are in no particular order.

    Pretty in Pink would have been my number one because I had it on my big New Wave list, but when I checked it had post-punk as the main genre. All these labels confuse the shit out of me. This is a good list though especially Echo Beach and Accidents Will Happen and Blondie

This compilation is not jam-packed full of typically Motown material, as the subsequent volume are, but it is crammed with early sixties diner/fairground/milk bar atmosphere - part soul, part r 'n' b, part gospel, part rock 'n' roll, part doo-wop. As soon as I started listening to disc one and found it was just a real pleasure - each track was vibrant and so evocative. The Beatles will have loved listening to this material in the early sixties and the influence on their first two albums in particular is clear to hear. There is some jazz on here too, as Berry Gordy liked his jazz and was keen to release it on his label and blues too, from the excellent Singin' Sammy Ward (surely Van Morrison must have been listening to him - check out Part Time Love ).  The big hitters, however, are very much Mary Wells, The Marvelettes, The Contours and a young (Little) Stevie Wonder, appearing here with his first single and two more. The New York Dolls: The New York Dolls - 1973

I remember when The New York Dolls appeared on the scene and watching them The Old Grey Whistle Test , looking forward, post- Aladdin Sane , to seeing the new US rival to Bowie. There had already been Lou Reed, of course, but this lot were supposed to be the real thing. I recall being somewhat underwhelmed and a bit perplexed by them, but at fourteen, I guess I'll forgive myself. Anyway, for whatever reason, they never really took off. I think they were considered too drugged-up and decadent, certainly in the UK. They seemed genuinely seedy as opposed even to Bowie, Bolan, Mott The Hoople, Roxy Music and the like. Strangely, despite their drag-style get-up, what comes across loud and clear listening to them is a raucous macho swagger.  This, in many ways, however, has a serious claim to being the first punk rock record, three years before the term had been invented. Mary Wells: The Definitive Collection

Mary  Wells was one of the first artists to be successful on the Motown label and she laid huge foundations for groups like Diana Ross & The Supremes and Martha & The Vandellas to follow.  Mary had a strong and versatile voice and her biggest hit, My Guy , is by no means representative of her material overall. She also, perhaps unadvisedly, left Motown in 1964-65 over a contract dispute and her career never recovered, which was a crying shame.  I have covered this compilation plus a few extra tracks that I have as well. I'll begin with the gritty bluesy upbeat soul of  Bye Bye Baby  as this is a song that finds Mary's voice far more growly, earthy and robust than it was on a love song like  My Guy . Tragically, this throaty voice contributed to her early death, aged just 49.  My Guy  is an all-time classic, of course, full of great brass and a totally irresistible rhythm. The Cure: Three Imaginary Boys - 1979

I never really got into The Cure. I knew a few singles and I think I saw them live, sharing the bill with Wire, but I can't quite remember.  Their seemingly impenetrable brand of dark-clad post punk just wasn't really my thing. I much preferred the energy and fist-pumping of punk. However I have delved into quite a bit of their stuff here.  Anyway, this was their debut album, from May 1979, and, although it went unnoticed by me at the time, it stands as one of the full-on post punk trail blazers - stabbing guitar riffs, rubbery bass lines, metronomic drums and a vocal full of ennui. Their temperamental, precious singer Robert Smith was never happy with the album, apparently, and it was compiled without his consent. That sort of added to the intrigue that surrounded this mysterious group. Their music, however, was often more listenable than one may have imagined .  There  is also an appealing rough and ready sound to this album. I should have give it more attention back in 1979,

Talking Heads: More Songs About Buildings And Food - 1978

  This, Talking Heads' second album ,  was somewhat similar in style and conception to the band’s well-received debut album from the year before, but with subtle differences. There was a slightly more perceivable danceability to the music compared to the starkness of the debut album. Bassist Tina Weymouth and drummer Chris Frantz are more to the fore. Notably, ex Roxy Music member Brian Eno was now the producer.  Highlights  are the short, frenetic opener  Thank You For Sending Me An Angel , with its invigorating drum intro and Byrne’s soaring vocal, the heady and funky  Warning Sign  (again featuring a great drum intro), the energetic  The Girls Want To Be With The Girls  and the somewhat hyper (again!), breathless funky rock of  Stay Hungry . The roots of some of the Remain In Light material can be heard on this track's fade out.  Also very enjoyable is the fabulously funky guitar intro to   With  Our Lov e  - and the superb backing bass too.  The Good Thing  has a catchy voc

The Complete Motown Singles Collection Vol. 1: 1959-1961

Well, the legend began here. This is an interesting collection in terms of tracing the roots of Motown, but if you are looking for anything approaching archetypal Motown, then you won't get any of that here. Even more so than Volume Two, you will get a shed-load of rock 'n' roll-influenced material, plenty of doo-wop and lots of gospel or gospel-influenced stuff too. Why, there's even a bit of surf-rock too in Ich-I-Bon by Nick & the Jaguars.  There are over 150 songs on six disc here and at least 20 of them have not made it on to my download from my original CD box set. The reason? They are rubbish, mainly novelties or country ballads. The rest of it - 140 songs - are worth listening to. They are brim-full of potential and the dominant artists are The Miracles, Barrett Strong, Mable John, Mary Wells, The Contours and The Satintones. Phil Spector: Phil Spector's Greatest Hits

An essential collection of early 60s rock 'n' roll Heaven here. No question about it.   The classics simply don’t stop.  Ronnie Spector ’s timeless voice on  Be My Baby   and  Baby I Love You   still sends shivers down my spine and always will. Then there is  Darlene Love ’s vocal on  He’s A Rebel  and  LaLa Brook s on  Da Doo Ron Ron  and  Then He Kissed Me .   The Righteous Brothers '  You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'  and  Unchained Melody .  The bottom line is that these are simply some of the best pure pop records you will ever hear. Is there a better intro than that on  Baby I Love You  - and when  Ronnie 's  "whoh-oh"  comes in, I am almost in tears every time. Not quite, but you know what I mean. Just wonderful. One of the best records ever made. Terry Reid: Bang Bang You're Terry Reid - 1968

  The great thing about music is that I find I am constantly discovering new stuff every day, even material like this, some of which is over fifty years old.  Despite having a reasonable musical knowledge dating back to my first conscious listening aged around seven or eight in 1967 I freely admit that until yesterday I had never even hear Terry Reid's name, ever. Having found out about him I now find that incredibly surprising because it transpires that he was the vocalist a that young Jimmy Page had earmarked for the lead singer's role in none other the soon-to-be behemoth rock gods Led Zeppelin. Reid turned the gig down, as he was contracted to touring work, supporting The Rolling Stones at one point. Apparently he pointed Page in the direction of Robert Plant and John Bonham and, of course, we all know what happened next.  Many cognoscenti were aware of Reid's work as a phenomenal bluesy, throaty, range-filled singer and also a songwriter and guitarist but unfortunately

Kansas: Kansas - 1974

  The debut album from Kansas is an absolute delight - a marvellous quirky curio as the band attempt to merge US riffy rock with UK prog with touches of grandiosity and glam.  It is a vibrant, catchy, violin-driven rock album with hints of Cockney Rebel, Golden Earring, Genesis, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple, Rush and even bar-room heads-down boogie rock. I completely love it and listening to it took my by surprise. It deserves far more critical acclaim than it has garnered.   The old side one is the better of the two, however, with highlights in  Can I Tell You , the cover of J.J. Cale's  Bringing It Back  and  Lonely Wind , with the second side becoming just a tad indulgent .

The Cure: Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me - 1987

What's this? A double album? Had The Cure gone all prog rock? For me, and probably many others, a double album of The Cure may seem a little off-putting. However, this offering contains easily enough variety to offset that, although it is still too damn long (I'm just not a fan of double albums).  It is, though, The Cure's most carefree and enjoyable album, by far.  The Kiss  is thumping and robust while  Catch  is plaintively melodic.  If Only   Tonight We Could Sleep  is an Eastern-influenced slow number complete with sitar, as if George Harrison and his mates had come into the studio.  Why Can't I Be You?  is a Love Cats-ish jaunty, brassy number and  How Beautiful Are You  is full of blaring horns and saxophones. Is this really The Cure? Why,  Hot Hot Hot !!!  even finds them going deliciously funky.  The Snakepit  is catchy and Smiths-esque in that mid-late eighties jangly guitar style.  Icing Sugar  sounds like early Roxy Music in places, with its saxophone sound.
