THE FOUR TOPS

The Four Tops were most definitely better-known for their veritable stream of corking hit singles. Their albums tended to include a few of these each, a couple of other good Motown numbers and a whole side of covers of Beatles or Monkees songs and/or other easy-listening, poppy standards. Anyway, despite that, I've covered a fair few of them....

THE ROLLING STONES

Ah, The Rolling Stones. Where do I start?  I guess I was first made aware of them as a seven or eight year-old in the 1966-67-68 period when they started to appeal to my heightening sense that the all-conquering Beatles were goody-goodies and The Stones were proper bad boys. My developing tastes found this to be an admirable thing. Even at that age, there was a nascent feeling that if the older generation - parents, teachers and the like, even the judiciary - despised them, they must have something about them. Ironically, though, my Mother loved The Stones.  Then, of course,  there was the music - loud, punchy, riffy, buzzy and singalong, but not in a  "she loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah.."  way, but in a  "he can't be a man because he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me"  style. THE TEMPTATIONS

Now, I love Motown and so many of its artists and groups, but, if I had to choose just one to take to that desert island, then it would be The Temptations. They were great in the David Ruffin/Eddie Kendricks years but managed to continue the quality into the early seventies, despite two wonderful vocalists like that leaving the group. Indeed, surprising as it may sound, some of their finest recordings come from the early seventies. Click on the images below to read the reviews. Aerosmith: Get Your Wings - 1974

Aerosmith's next two albums became  a little bit more professional, varied and appealing each time. This was the first of them... Same Old Song And Dance is a gloriously riffy opener, augmented by some kick-ass brass from The Brecker Brothers. It is pretty much blueprint mid-seventies US hard rock in four/five minutes. It is loud, riffy and chugging. I have read some criticisms of the drum sound somewhere. You won't get any here. It pounds away nicely for me, thanks. The marvellously-titled Lord Of The Thighs has a vaguely bluesy, funky rhythm to it and a great rolling drum sound that matches the riffs every step of the way. It is an early example of rock served up with a slightly funky edge.  The band were said to have developed a "dirty funk" sound and while I can sort of understand the description i.e. there is a greasy, sleazy undertow to the music, it sure ain't really funky, is it?  The sound is definitely getting more grubbily appealing as the albums go by,...

TOM PETTY (with The Heartbreakers & solo)

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers came on to the scene in 1976, after a few years gigging as Mudcrutch, and because of the time they emerged, they were considered punk. I guess they had a swagger and wore leather jackets, but they were no Ramones. They were, quite simply, a Southern States US rock band, albeit with a penchant for short, concise, sometimes fast-paced rock songs. Their influences were The Byrds, The Rolling Stones and even 60s pop bands like The Searchers.  Click on to the images below to read the reviews. The Beach Boys: 20 Golden Greats

The Beach Boys, like their sixties counterparts the Beatles, were very much a group of distinct phases. Like The Beatles, they began with several years of joyful, unashamed teen pop before noticeably "going weird" at the same time.  This is the very first Beach Boys compilation I bought, in the boiling hot UK summer of 1976. It was totally ideal for such a summer. I almost felt I was catching a wave in California even though I was in Buckinghamshire.  "If everybody had an ocean"  - indeed. The collection takes us to the end of the sixties, missing out the Surf's Up and Holland albums, both of which are good, and the occasional later classic such as Lady Lynda , from 1980. No matter, though, because these years were The Beach Boys' best, for sure.  We start off with some glorious sun, sea and sand fun, fun, fun. Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye: Diana & Marvin - 1973

  It would seem that this apparently harmonious collaboration between two of Motown's biggest stars in the early seventies was beset with problems.  The album of duets between  Marvin Gaye  and  Diana Ross  had been mooted once 1970 but Gaye was having problems getting over the death of a previous singing partner in  Tammi Terrell . He also felt that singing duets was not a good thing, as both  Mary Wells  and  Kim Weston  suffered career contract breakdowns after recording with him. So, he was loth to join up with Ross. He also blotted his copybook by smoking marijuana in the studio (as was his wont) as the then pregnant Ross showed up. Arguments and tension ensued. Then there was the problem of the billing - whose name would be mentioned first. THE JACKSON 5

The Jackson 5 - five irrepressible teens and pre-teens that took the music world by storm in the late sixties and continued to do so until 1975, when their spin-off solo careers took over, followed by their mutation into The Jacksons - more mature disco purveyors - which saw them reach even greater heights. I cover the whole lot here, and rightly so. Don't tell me The Jackson 5 were merely throwaway bubblegum-ers. They weren't. Far from it. THE CURE

I never really got into The Cure. I knew a few singles and I think I saw them live, sharing the bill with Wire, but I can't quite remember.  Their seemingly impenetrable brand of dark-clad post punk just wasn't really my thing. I much preferred the energy and fist-pumping of punk. However I have delved into quite a bit of their stuff here. I'm sort of half and half with them. I respect them but I'm not really into them. DIANA ROSS & THE SUPREMES

Diana Ross and The Supremes were, quite simply, a pop chart phenomenon. Despite an uncertain and tentative beginning when they were known at Motown Records, harshly, as the "no-hit Supremes", they went on, from 1964, to score hit after hit and become the best-selling female vocal group of all time.
